The Baltic Textile Art project
LET’S CELEBRATE TOGETHER
2018 is the year of celebration for all three Baltic countries. In 1918 Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania declared their statehood and independence. Lithuania and Estonia will celebrate its birthday in February, Latvia in November 2018.
It is known that working together makes things easier as well as celebrating together brings more joy. The ARTEMISIA organization suggested celebrating centennial anniversary together and launched a project that united textile artists of the three Baltic States.
The main incentive of the project LET’S CELEBRATE TOGETHER is to show the beauty of the Baltic nature in all the seasons of the year and to attract attention to patchwork quilt as a rapidly developing kind of textile art.
The International Quilt exhibition organized by ARTEMISIA presents mostly patchwork quilts, which means that the upper layers of the textile works consist of mosaics of different fabric pieces sewn together and the textile works are stitched (quilted) through all three layers. This technique has been creatively used all over the world for centuries but it is relatively new in the Baltic States. Patchwork is a versatile technique that is used not only for making clothes and home textiles but also for artistic self-expression.
Patchwork quilt is growing in popularity. There are festivals and exhibitions for patchwork and quilt enthusiasts, books and magazines, multimillion industries produce necessary materials and tools, courses and schools help to master the skills.
The theme of the exhibition is BIRTHDAY, the choice of the theme is prompted by the event itself.
We connect the birthday of the state with a person’s birthday. It happens once a year and it can occur at any moment in any season. Who chooses the moment of our birth we don’t know and we don’t look for the answer to this question. The artists were asked to depict the nature on the day of their birth. Some of them chose to show landscapes of their native places, some created an abstract composition in the colours of their birth season, some created an artistic image that renders their feelings of that day. It is the right of an artist to choose the approach no matter which technique is used.
